Counseling

JFCS offers professional counseling to children, adolescents, and adults in every phase of the life cycle and from all walks of life. We offer services that are

  • Compassionate
  • Respectful
  • Confidential
  • Professional
  • Problem-focused
  • Results-oriented

Why call JFCS for counseling?
Sometimes events in our lives seem just too overwhelming to manage without outside help. Sometimes we need an objective listener to help us sort things out. Sometimes we desire to make personal growth in a particular area of our life. Or we might just need to hear a different point of view, get practical suggestions, or find a “listening ear.” Any of these reasons might lead us to seek outside counseling.

What kind of issues do people work on in counseling?
Issues that are frequently addressed in counseling might include job stress, life or school transitions, grief and loss, conflict resolution, depression, anxiety, marital or relationship problems, trauma, or health concerns, to name just a few.

What can I expect from my counselor?
Our counselors are trained professionals who have extensive experience working with diverse problems and populations. At your first session, you and your counselor will discuss the problems, which have led you to seek services. Together, you will create a plan to address these concerns. This might include working with you individually, referring you to an appropriate group, or bringing in other family members. Above all, you can expect to be treated with respect, compassion, and understanding.

How do I schedule an appointment?
To schedule an intake appointment, call 503-226-7079 ext. 140, Monday to Thursday 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.; Friday 9:00a.m.- 2:00 p.m. A counselor will speak with you and help you arrange an appointment.

Family

Counseling Success Stories

Tina and John had been married for six years and had just had their first child when they began to argue more than usual. John felt that Tina was now giving all of her attention to the new baby, and Tina thought John didn’t understand why she always felt so exhausted. They decided to get some outside help before things got worse, and with the help of their counselor at JFCS, they learned to turn to each other for emotional support through the transition of adjusting to parenthood and the changes this presented.

Sam, a 28-year old graduate student, had found himself feeling sad and blue for some time. He was falling behind in his school work, spent way too much time in bed, and generally was overwhelmed. Sam realized that he needed to get some outside help when he began to wonder if life was worth living and sought counseling at JFCS. With the support and encouragement of his counselor, Sam learned ways of helping himself to feel better and his depression gradually lifted. He was able to complete graduate school and has felt well ever since.
