Emergency Aid FAQs
Q. How do I schedule an emergency aid appointment?
A. Call the Emergency Aid line at 503-226-7079 ext. 40, leave a message regarding your request and an Emergency Aid Case Manager will return your call within 48 hours. At that time the case manager will discuss your needs and, if funds are available, schedule a time to meet with you. If you need immediate assistance call the United Way information and referral line at 503-222-5555.
Q. What happens in an emergency aid appointment?
A. An emergency aid case manager will meet with you to assess your situation and assist you in developing an individualized plan to address your current difficulties. This plan will likely include referrals to other JFCS services and local agencies, as well as steps that you as an individual can take to resolve both your short and long term problems.
Q. What sort of financial assistance can emergency aid provide me?
A. Depending on your situation, JFCS may be able to assist you with a small amount of financial aid (common requests include rent or utilities), preferably in conjunction with financial assistance from other agencies and your own support network. If you meet income guidelines and have school-aged children, your family may be eligible for vouchers at a local store for school supplies and clothing once per school year. Additionally, JFCS can provide vouchers to Council Thrift Store for clothing and small household items. We also have a detailed list of local food pantries and can occasionally provide food vouchers for those in need.
Q. How often can I receive emergency aid assistance?
A. Due to the limited nature of our funding, we cannot assist all requests, nor can we provide ongoing support for individuals or families. Our planning process and the steps you have developed with the case manager will ideally move you to a more stable life situation.
Q. How can JFCS help me if I would like to get holiday gifts or holiday food boxes?
A. It is recommended that you call our emergency aid department at least six – eight weeks before the holiday, the sooner the better. We are not always able to fill all holiday requests, but if we are unable to do so we will refer you to another agency that may be able to assist you.
