Lifeline FAQs

Q. What is Lifeline?

A. Lifeline is a program of Jewish Family & Child Service (JFCS), a nonprofit organization serving the greater Portland community for nearly 60 years. The services provided through Lifeline exist to help seniors and people with disabilities live safe, healthy, comfortable, independent lives in their own homes. Lifeline specialists are compassionate, professional and experienced problem solvers providing assistance in the form of Home Care, Counseling, Consultations and Care Management.

Q. What if I don’t need counseling services? Can Lifeline tailor a plan for me?

A. Yes. A Lifeline specialist will work with you and your family to identify your specific needs and provide only those services you require to enhance your health, safety and independence.

Q. What happens during the consultation?

A. During the consultation, a Lifeline specialist will begin a personalized assessment to ensure we understand all that is needed. At your convenience, a Lifeline specialist can either come to your home or meet you on-site to review those aspects of your residence and lifestyle that impact your ability to live a safe, healthy, independent life. Together we can review your own or your family member’s:

  • Physical and emotional health
  • Social activities
  • Home safety and maintenance needs
  • Needs for transportation, housekeeping, meal preparation, etc.
  • Financial resources and need for assistance managing finances

Q. What is home care?

A. Home care enables seniors and people with disabilities to live as independently as possible in their own homes while ensuring their safety and quality of life. Home care assistants are individuals who are hired to help with light housekeeping, meal preparation, grocery shopping, companionship, transportation, exercise and more. These home care assistants must pass a background check, receive CPR and first aid certification, and hold a food handler’s certification card.
